Are Repeat In-Home Photoshoots Worth It?
Just like your children, your home changes year after year. And if you live in the Bay Area, you know those changes can happen fast. When we talk about smaller homes in San Francisco and Marin, we’re often talking about spaces that have to work really hard. They shift and evolve right alongside your family.
My own San Francisco studio apartment started as a pretty typical adult space with a crib tucked into the corner. Simple enough. Within what felt like five minutes, it turned into a completely reworked layout. Suddenly there was a toy kitchen, a closet turned into a bedroom for my oldest, and a crib squeezed in for my youngest. Every inch had a purpose. Then, not long after that, we moved into a larger home in Marin (two bathrooms with a potty training toddler are game changing!!!).
That kind of transition is incredibly common. A lot of families in Marin County and San Francisco aren’t in their forever homes when their kids are little. You make it work. You rearrange, you get creative, you outgrow things, and then you move on. The funny part is how quickly those earlier spaces fade from memory. The tight quarters, the clever setups, the way your life actually looked in those years. It all disappears faster than you think.
That’s one of the biggest reasons I believe so strongly in in-home photoshoots. They document more than just your family. They capture the environment that held all of those everyday moments. The small kitchens, the shared rooms, the toys taking over your living space. It might not feel like something you want to remember right now, but later on, it absolutely will be.
This family is a perfect example. I photographed them two years ago in their apartment when their home had two toddler beds and a fairly simple setup. When I came back, it was a completely different space. Two closet bedrooms, new furniture, and a full little art studio tucked into the mix. Same family, totally different phase of life.
They moved shortly after this session, and now those images mean even more. They have a record of a time that would have otherwise been a blur. That’s the real value of doing in-home photoshoots more than once. You’re not just capturing your kids as they grow, you’re capturing the spaces that shaped those years.
