How Long Does an In-Home Newborn Session Take?

Here’s the short answer: In-home newborn sessions with me typically take about 1 to 2 hours, with most landing somewhere right in the middle. If you’ve been wondering how long an in-home newborn session takes, that range gives us plenty of flexibility without dragging things out, and more importantly, it allows your baby to set the pace. That may seem like a reeeeally long time, but trust me, it flies by and I’ll explain why.

Now here’s the long one:

Newborn sessions are completely different from any other type of session I photograph.

Unlike with my other subjects, I can’t distract or play my way out of a cranky mood with a baby, but I can give them time. Time with you, time to eat, time to cuddle with you alone. Newborn sessions are longer for that very reason. The amazing thing about babies is that given a little time, a little food, or a little change in environment, their mood will improve. I never rush my newborn sessions for this very reason. You will have the time you and your baby need to capture every single incredible newborn moment during our session.

That built-in flexibility is what makes these sessions feel calm instead of chaotic. There’s no pressure to “perform,” no clock ticking in the background making you feel like your baby has to cooperate on demand. We follow their lead, and it works. When people ask how long an in-home newborn session takes, what they’re really asking is how much time we allow for all of this, and the answer is always: enough.

The timing can also shift depending on your family dynamic, especially if there are older siblings involved. Photographing a newborn and a toddler at the same time is a bit like catching lightning in a bottle. You’re waiting for that small window where both kids are content, calm, and in the right place at the right time. That’s not a science. It’s an art.

Older kids, especially the high-energy ones, usually need more breaks. And that’s completely expected. Unlike outdoor sessions where we can run around, play games, and let them burn off energy, in-home newborn sessions are a little more contained. We’re keeping things safe and calm around the baby, so instead of constant movement, we work in short, focused bursts.

We’ll bring siblings in when they’re ready, get those sweet connected moments, and then let them go take a break, have a snack, or just be kids again. This rhythm keeps things positive and avoids pushing them past their limit, which never ends well for anyone involved.

The session I’m sharing here was just with one baby, so it moved relatively quickly and we were done in about an hour. No sibling coordination, no competing needs, just us following baby’s cues and moving along as they allowed. Those sessions can feel especially smooth, but even then, we still leave room for pauses, feedings, and resets.

At the end of the day, the length of your session isn’t about the clock. It’s about creating space for real moments to happen. Some babies settle right in. Others need a little more time. Both are completely normal, and both lead to beautiful images.

So if you’re still wondering how long an in-home newborn session takes, the answer is simple. Long enough to get it right, without ever feeling rushed.

Hear what this mom had to say about her session: “Cristin did a in-home session and we couldn’t be happier with how they turned out! They are stunning and she managed to get all the smiles and giggles out of our baby like a pro to capture them! Highly recommend for any baby or family photos!” Click here for more reviews.
