The Benefits of Yearly Studio Photos

For years, I only photographed families in-home and outdoors. My specialty was in-home and I always said that the best part about yearly in-home photoshoots was that you got to see your family in the same place and had consistent photos year after year. I mean, your family growing with one picture on the couch every year as your baby grows from newborn to 3 year old? Literally priceless.

The one problem with this is that many families do not want to use their home as the backdrop. Maybe they don’t think the light is good, or there’s not enough space, or they don’t love their decor enough for photos. Enter my Sausalito studio. When I first started photographing families in my studio a few years ago, I imagined families coming in for milestone photos for their kiddos with perfect lighting and a clean backdrop. These classic photos could be featured side by side on their walls and it would be one of the biggest benefits of yearly studio photos.

What I didn’t expect is that people wouldn’t want to JUST come for kids portraits, but would want to come for yearly studio photos for their families, too! From maternity, to newborn, to family photos year after year, the clean, white backdrop was the perfect reason to get yearly studio photos. They hang them on their walls, seeing their family exactly as they are. One of the huge benefits of the studio is that it’s exactly the same no matter the season or weather. That means that unlike outdoor photos, with locations that change based on the season*, you could have one session take place in July because it’s the most convenient, and then the next year do them in November and they would match perfectly year after year.

This family just started their journey of yearly studio photos, with this being their second year. I love seeing how their kids have grown, and how the family’s style changed slightly year after year, while staying true to their vibes.
