On the Importance of Documenting Your Home Before a Big Move
When you photograph families, especially young families, ESPECIALLY in the Bay Area, a lot of moves tend to happen. With more children, people start to outgrow their small homes and apartments and they expand either to Marin or the surrounding suburbs, or leave the Bay completely.
One of my families that I've been photographing since I started my business made the out-of-state move recently. They had lived in their house for ten years, and had brought both of their babies home to that house. It wasn't everything they wanted it to be, but they called it home for such a critical point in their lives.
They had always been hesitant to have me there for a myriad of reasons (mainly light and space), but when they were about to move, we decided to bite the bullet. I spent their day in the life session in all of the rooms that are special to them. The girls played the family piano, curled up in their beds, and made rice krispies in the kitchen they lovingly remodeled years ago. They relived memories that they've made in this home.
Listen, I know there are a million reasons why you don't want to have photos in your home, but if you are moving, I urge you to reconsider. Remembering the spaces you have lived in your life, especially the places you brought home your babies to, is such an important thing.
The photos my photographer took of my little family in our studio apartment in San Francisco are irreplaceable. I would save those only after my children in a fire.
