Marin Photoshoot Location: Lucas Valley Forest

This Lucas Valley location is one of those little hidden gems that feels like a deep forest adventure without actually needing to hike. Nestled in a quiet part of Marin, it features winding little trails, a leaf-covered ground, and a canopy of the coolest, twisting trees. The trees here are mostly evergreen, which means you’ll get a timeless backdrop no matter the season, that said, the spring does bring a touch more green and vibrance to the surrounding foliage.

What makes this spot extra special is the variety of little nooks tucked throughout: trails lined with tall tree trunks, open patches that fill with light, and even a charming wooden footbridge that we can use if the sun cooperates. It’s the perfect balance of structured nature and organic beauty, giving us the flexibility to create a gallery that feels rich and full of variety.

Why This Location Works So Well

As a Marin photographer, I’m always on the lookout for spaces that photograph beautifully while also being realistic for families. This Marin photoshoot location is an ideal choice because it checks all the boxes: accessible, versatile, and undeniably scenic. It’s just steps away from the parking area, which makes it easy-peasy for families with young kids, strollers, or grandparents in tow. You don’t have to trek through miles of trails to get a “woodsy” feel because it’s all right there within a few steps.

Another reason this location is one of my go-to spots is its timelessness. Evergreen trees ensure it looks lush year-round, while seasonal touches of spring green or summer light add variety. Morning light can get bright quickly, especially in the summer months, but I’ll guide us to the shady paths and textured backdrops that work best. This means your gallery will still look soft and beautiful even on the sunniest day.

Best Timing for Sessions

This Marin photoshoot location is only available on weekends in the morning. Morning sessions work especially well for families with younger kids who are happiest earlier in the day. By keeping sessions here to the morning, we take advantage of the best light the area has to offer and keep everyone comfortable during their time in front of the camera.

Types of Sessions

When I choose locations for my clients, I always keep flexibility in mind. Some spaces lend themselves better to shorter minis, while others are worth exploring in depth during a full session. This location is one of those rare spots that works beautifully for both.

For a mini session, we can stay within one or two of the scenic “nooks” and create a quick gallery of images that feel complete and cohesive. For a full session, we can wander further and take advantage of the variety: wide shots in open patches, close-ups on the shaded trails, and everything in between.

Minis sessions are typically shorter, special sessions that I offer during limited times of year. You can click here under specials to see if any are available at the moment. To find out if a mini is right for you, click here to learn more.

Why Families Love It

This spot is perfect for families who want that “adventurous” feel without committing to a hike. Parents love that it’s easy to access, and kids love the little trails and bridge that feel like they’re exploring. From my perspective as a photographer, it offers just enough variety to make your gallery feel full, but it’s still compact enough that we never have to walk far to find the next great backdrop.

If you’re looking for a Marin photoshoot location that combines ease, variety, and timeless beauty, Lucas Valley is one of the best choices around. To see a sample gallery from a full session click here. To read more about the Bay Area locations I offer for outdoor sessions, click here.
