Inspiration: Ocean Beach Family Photos

One of the locations I added to my line-up last year was the Ocean Beach location, officially known as Dunes and Sand. I’ve been wanting to add a beach location to my list for years, and I finally did with this one! The dunes create a beautiful place to start our session where the kids can play in the sand without getting wet and we can explore as the starts to dip by the ocean.

After the more traditional portraits, we head down to the beach to finish the session playing with the sunset behind us. While Ocean Beach is not safe for children to wade in, we often play in the first inch or two of the surf while we hold little ones hands to keep them from running off, with fun games throwing them in the air and running from the waves.

As any San Francisco native knows, The Ocean Beach location gives off different vibes in the sun (pictured here) than if it’s foggy (pictured here), so you make sure you are prepared for both, as I don’t reschedule for fog. I mean, Karl the fog is pretty much a main character in San Francisco.

Families that thrive at this Ocean Beach location are ones who like to let their kids run a little wild, have fun with sand between their toes, and don’t mind a little windswept or sea salt in their hair by the end of the session. This photoshoot location is best for immediate families or smaller extended families (less than 6 people) to make sure we can get cozy and have fun.
