How Far in Advance do You Book a Newborn Photographer?
In the world of getting on the daycare waitlist in San Francisco as soon as your baby is born to get a spot, Bay Area parents are often stressed about all the things they need to prepare for when they get pregnant. If you live in an apartment, you may also be trying to do the math of how to get your baby nursery to fit in a closet (been there!), or deciding on whether you need to move to make room. So it’s totally natural when all of these questions come up to wonder how far in advance you need to book a newborn photographer to make sure you have the newborn photos (and the newborn photographer!) of your dreams.
While each newborn photographer, your location and the time of year all come into play, how far you in advance to book your newborn session varies, so I’m going to talk just about my experience in the Bay Area. I always recommend booking as soon as you know you want newborn photos, especially if you are pairing it with a maternity session, but you have more time than you think. While fall is every family photographer’s busy time (hello Christmas cards!) and weekends may fill quickly, I always leave a few daytime spots for in-home newborn sessions each month.
If you are looking for baby-led studio newborn photography, I have an amazing all-white studio in Sausalito in Marin County just over the bridge. Those dates open 8 weeks in advance, so check my instagram or facebook for announcements.
If you are looking for a weekday in-home newborn session, though, I have lots of weekday spots available and you can even wait until baby arrives to schedule. If your baby is here and you are worried about whether your baby is too old for newborn photos, I suggest reading this article talking about just that. So how far in advance you need to book a newborn photographer is totally up to you and your needs. If you are a planner and know you want ALL the photos, do it as soon as you know. If you want to wait to decide, you can do that, too!
If your baby is due in the fall (September-November) and you have your heart set on a certain weekend date, I would recommend signing up for my newsletter. My newsletter gets first dibs on fall booking and booking when the schedule opens is the only way to guarantee yourself a spot for fall on the weekend.
