Kids Portraits- 5 Tips to Make the Most of Your Affordable Studio Photos

If you’re looking for affordable studio photos of your child that are fast, easy, and actually fun, my 10-minute kid portrait sessions might be just what you need. These sessions take place in my all-white studio in Sausalito, California—a calm, minimal space that keeps the focus on your kid’s personality. Whether you’re popping in just for this or adding it on to a family session for a few extra portraits, these sessions are designed to be simple and stress-free. They are perfect for milestones like sitting up, one year or an annual update for back to school or birthday. Here’s how to make sure you get the most out of every single minute.

1. Set yourself up for success (before you even arrive)
A little prep goes a long way. These sessions only last 10 minutes, so it’s important your child is ready to go. That means making sure they’ve eaten recently, used the bathroom, and aren’t showing up too close to nap time. You know the drill—catch them when they’re alert and happy.

2. Be photo ready… just in case
Some kids, especially younger ones or those with a little stranger danger, might need a few minutes to warm up. If your child needs some extra support, you might be hopping in for a few shots to help them feel comfortable. Or maybe they’re nailing it and we’ve got everything we need in five minutes—then it’s your chance to jump in for a few bonus photos at the end. Either way, come ready just in case.

3. One parent only, no extras
To help your child focus and keep the session distraction-free, bring only one parent—and no extra visitors. A crowd behind the camera can be confusing or overstimulating, especially in a new environment. Keeping it calm and simple is key to great photos. If you are adding these to a family mini session, I may ask you to take the other kids or adults outside for a few minutes to focus on the child getting their photos taken.

4. Pack a small reward—but keep it hidden
A little bribe (think goldfish sticker, or fun stop afterward) can be incredibly helpful—but timing is everything. Keep it tucked away and only bring it up if I give you the green light. Mentioning it too early, especially with toddlers, can backfire fast. I do bring lollipops for kiddos as well, so don’t worry if you forget.

5. Bring a layer for variety
If your kid is cruising through the session, we can switch things up with a quick jacket or accessory for a different look. It’s a simple way to get more variety out of your affordable studio photos without needing more time.

These 10-minute sessions are perfect for getting updated portraits without committing to a full session. They also make the ideal add-on to a family shoot—especially if you want a few more solo shots of your kid or want to do a quick outfit change. And with a clean, timeless backdrop in my Sausalito studio, these affordable studio photos are something you’ll actually want to frame and keep, and that you can keep adding to for a simple look year after year that stands the test of time.
